According to recent estimates, Sri Lanka’s cities are expanding by 6 per cent per year – a rate of growth that is among the highest in the region. Cities are hubs of economic growth and socio-cultural affairs. Their vulnerability to climate change has serious repercussions on human lives and economic properties. It is vital to strengthen the capacity of key institutions responsible for urban planning and development. A coordinated approach is required here to overcome any barriers. The current UNLOCKED discussion contributes to our understanding of climate risk and resilience in Sri Lanka’s cities. Identifying and fixing implementation gaps will take Sri Lanka closer to achieving Sustainable Development making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
