Volunteerism has been ingrained and embedded in Sri Lanka’s rich tradition and over the years, has shifted in focus but not in principle. With the increase in interest of people to involve themselves in volunteer activities and the equal increase of opportunities to volunteer, Sri Lanka required a framework or formal instrument to regulate volunteerism in the country. The National Policy on Volunteerism enables national level engagement in promoting, coordinating, mobilizing and establishing organized volunteering in Sri Lanka. The current UNLOCKED discussion is focused on identifying the most feasible methods through which this Policy can be implemented. Identifying implementation gaps will help establish an effective National Action Plan taking the country closer to Sustainable Development through the efficient utilization of volunteer efforts.
